Shades Of Deception

A white lie is said to be harmless, done to protect the other person’s feelings. A darker shade is when someone lies to your face not to protect your feelings, but to hide their own wrongdoing  and does not care that they are telling lies. Maybe they get so used to doing it that they don’t think of it as lying or it is just a version of a reality that is the most convenient for them. The darkest form of deception is to think that if you keep repeating a lie for long enough it will become the truth.

What Floats Your Soap?

Ivory soap has been around for over 100 years and it still floats.

“…we may not think about the benefit of having soap that floats. But in the late 19th century, when people were still bathing in the murky waters of local rivers and streams, a soap that floated was revolutionary.” (Ivory.com)

Ivory soap is advertised as pure and that it will float in water. The advantage being you will not have to grope around in your bathwater looking for your soap.

So it turns out what makes this soap float is air bubbles. Makes me think about something else that is full of air, hot air. Like some of the  Republican members of the Intelligence Committee.  I bet they would have no trouble at all floating in murky waters.

The Time Is Right

It is hard to write about light things because I have been very disturbed over the goings on in my country. Part of me just wants to close my eyes to the bad in the world and think only of happy endings. What is more upsetting to me is that many in positions of leadership lack integrity. They want to gloss over and justify all the wrong doing so they can stay in power.

Assorted Nuts

I remember my maternal grandmother telling me that she had harvested walnuts in Northern California. Nowadays, the harvest is done by machines. Some brief research tells me that California grows most of the walnuts in the US and that the English Walnut was brought to California by the Spanish padres in the late 1700s. We used to get tangerines and whole walnuts in the shell in our Christmas stockings along with peppermint candy canes. Turns out this is an old European custom, ( the tangerines or oranges and walnuts). My maternal grandmother was English and I think the tradition was passed down from her. It’s been pretty nuts here in California recently with all the fires popping up North and South. I still have a suitcase packed in case of emergency. I like to think the fires will skip our town since we had them just last year and had to be evacuated. It’s a real shell game though and we can not take it for granted that we will be spared. Hope the rain comes early this year.

Window Dressing

Sometimes things can look good on the outside but appearances can be deceiving. Some people say that the ends justify the means no matter how low they go. They want to claim the mantle of righteousness but it is only window dressing.  What’s underneath is pretty shabby.

We are going through dark times in our country but I believe the truth will come to light in the end. As the impeachment investigation continues, I wish our Congress, and those willing to speak truth to power, strength and courage to carry on with this crucial work.

Little Bits Of Joy

The news of the world has been so bleak and then there are the personal stresses of my life. Finding myself saying ‘Oh, no!!’  and feeling down. I need to focus on all the little bits of joy, gather them up, and hold them close like a soft cozy blanket. Even though I feel my grief for world as well.

Earth, Wind, and Fire

I smelled the smoke last night before going to bed and decided to get a couple of flashlights out in case we have a blackout. Decided to start writing early today for the same reason. From past experience we know the drill here pretty well and plan to pack a few things in case we get the call the evacuate later. Really glad we don’t have any pets to worry about. My son has to pack up his cat along with his family. Right now the fires nearest to us are in the North San Fernando Valley and the winds are not blowing. If the winds pick up the fire could be heading toward us. I thought we might get through this year without wildfires.  We just had a tree cut back from our roof in back and I am glad we did that. I hope the fire is chased to ground before it takes flight.

Good Taste

I find that in this time of my life I appreciate even more my sense of taste when it comes to food. My daughter and I are picky about the quality of the coffee we drink at our house. Seems we are both into the robust flavor of dark roast coffee. I like mine with a little milk added. Coffee is part of my daily morning ritual. The coffee is made as soon as I get into the kitchen. Must have two cups to start my day. My husband purchased a new coffee grinder but I find it is only as good as the coffee you put in it. And we can find really good already ground fresh coffee at local stores. When I have my morning cup of coffee started, along with some toast, I am ready to peruse the morning papers online. The news has been very engaging lately, but can leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Casting Nets On Troubled Waters

‘Alea iacta est’ (the die is cast),  I heard someone say recently. And who knows what the future brings. We sail on troubled waters and hope for the best, but if we keep our faith in what’s right, we will come through it all just fine. Just feeling the butterflies in my stomach from the turmoil in the country and some personal stress too.  A bit tired to write more.
