The Best Holiday Gifts

“Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before! What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas…perhaps…means a little bit more!”

Dr. Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

Hannukah and Christmas are coinciding this year. No matter which one we celebrate, or maybe we have a secular approach, this time of year is a time of family and friends gathering. There can be all kinds of anxiety about gifts and holiday menus. But the most important thing is sharing time with people we love. That is the best holiday gift.

I am hoping for a special gift this year. That my baby grandson will keep growing bigger and stronger and will get to go home with his parents in the New Year.

Moot

I don’t give a hoot about “moot.” That is our word prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday this week. And as you can see I am posting on Sunday because I did not get inspired so much by moot yesterday. Moot indicates something has occurred and it is probably not worth it to debate the whys and wherefores. It is not worth it to go look back over the situation and argue about why it happened. It is done. Kind of like the recent presidential election in the US. We can go over and over it, trying to determine the cause(s) for the outcome. But maybe it is not productive to do that and no one will ever be able to prove, without a doubt, all the factors involved in the final result. We just need to focus on where do we go from here, (Even if it’s The Russians).

I love owls. The owl on the right is saying, ” I know it’s The Russians!” This post is for Stream of Consciousness Saturday hosted by Linda G Hill.

Strength In Numbers

My new baby grandson is 3 weeks old but that number of weeks does not reflect how old he really is when you adjust for his prematurity. He has already gone through some challenges and will have a ways to go until he is big and strong enough to go home with his parents. Much of my husband’s and my attention and energy have been focused on him and his parents. We have been visiting him when we can and trying to show him we are there for him. We have received many calls and emails from friends and family expressing concern. I had announced in a private email when he was born and that he had to be in NICU. I have recently asked for prayers and healing thoughts because I believe that when people direct their prayers and healing energy toward someone it really works. Even though I am not religious in a traditional sense. I remembered a study by Dr. Randolph Byrd done with patients on a coronary care unit at San Francisco General that showed that patients who were prayed for did better in various measures. Since then there has been controversy about that study’s methods and accuracy of outcomes. One thing I know is true for me is that the messages I have received from friends and family telling me that they are keeping my grandson in their thoughts and prayers has made me feel supported and better able to bear up. They have made me aware of all the kindness and caring of others. I hope all these healing thoughts are having the same effect on him. He is a little fighter.

Loving Wishes

“Goodnight nobody

Goodnight mush

And goodnight to the old lady whispering “hush”

Goodnight stars

Goodnight air

Good night noises everywhere” (from Goodnight Moon)

Little babies can hear even in the womb. And I am learning it is good to read to premature babies. It is good for language development. My little grandson needs a lot of quiet right now but it is also good for him to hear his parents and grandparents voices. So I am thinking about purchasing some children’s books to take to the NICU. I want him to get to know our voices and loving wishes.

Do you have a favorite childhood book?

Thanksgiving Turkey 2016

Is that the same turkey?  Same kitchen, different turkey. I have taken so many photos of “The Turkey” over the years that I have often joked I should have a Turkey Album. This year’s version turned out well. I have had years of practice to get the best tasting turkey and stuffing. We were a bit worn out this year because besides all the usual cleaning, which involves my last minute mad dash to dust, vacuum, swiffer, sort through piles, rearrange assorted belongings, move stuff to our overstuffed garage…we had a new grandchild born. He was born early and has to stay in NICU. He is very beautiful and a fighter. So we wanted to spend time with him and his parents. My husband said that next Thanksgiving he, baby Gavin, will be celebrating with us. We will be very, very Thankful for that.

Overdosing On Sci-Fi

“Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away.”  Well not really. There is always something, good and bad. But this past couple of weeks could be high on my list for bad. Made me have a feeling of unreality. How can this be happening?!  But I have been through tough things in life before and survived, so far. But as a way of coping this time, with my near depression, I have sought some comfort in bingeing on old Star Trek shows. I had already been watching Voyager episodes but then I started watching more and now I am onto Deep Space Nine. What I love about Star Trek , besides all the great characters, sets, and costumes/make up, is how in each episode there is a big problem but then it is resolved and justice is restored to the galaxy or the Alpha, Delta, and Gamma Quadrants. I think most times the “good guys” win. I read somewhere that that is what drama is supposed to do. There is a problem or crisis and then you have the resolution and catharsis. In Star Trek there is diversity and gender equality. It is very uplifting to see (space) people respecting each other even when they have very different cultures and appearances, and women respected and in leadership roles. I know what you’re thinking, The Borg can be difficult. But I kinda like them too. As long as they don’t try to assimilate me.

My grandson was born Friday (11/18/16) This is something good. I love him very much.

Smoke Has Been Seen Rising Over Mordor

“The election of Donald Trump to the Presidency is nothing less than a tragedy for the American republic, a tragedy for the Constitution, and a triumph for the forces, at home and abroad, of nativism, authoritarianism, misogyny, and racism. Trump’s shocking victory, his ascension to the Presidency, is a sickening event in the history of the United States and liberal democracy… It is impossible to react to this moment with anything less than revulsion and profound anxiety.” (David Remnick, The New Yorker).

I stayed up too late last night, watching in sickening disbelief, the election results. I am very worried about my country. This is the worst I have witnessed in my life besides assassinations. This was like the assassination of our country.

McGuffins Are Not Just In Novels

There is “high jingo,”as Harry Bosch would say, involved in the Clinton investigations by the FBI. Something fishy in their culture if we are to believe some of the stories coming out about about agents with a big hard on for Hilary Clinton. I am not talking about sex. It bothers me because politics is not supposed to be involved in police investigations but like Harry said about the LAPD in his story there seems to be “high jingo” here.

Another interesting aspect is the McGuffin plot device of the “emails.” This theory was advanced by Neal Gabler,  Alfred Hitchcock explains James Comey, the Media and 2016’s ‘McGuffin’….that the emails are a McGuffin, a plot device, objects to build a whole controversy around, that are virtually without any real meaning. Per Gabler:

“This has been true of the Clinton emails since the beginning. It was always something of a hoax — a new chapter for a hungry media juicing its audience. Not one in a hundred voters can tell you the awful crime Clinton was supposed to have committed or why it matters. Not one in a hundred — and I would include journalists — have any idea of what really went down with these emails, as I discussed in an earlier post that highlighted the one reporter, Garrett M. Graff of Politico, who actually did something it appears no other reporter thought of doing: read the FBI’s summary account of the investigation.”

I am always disappointed and disillusioned when I read about “high jingo” influencing justice and the truth in fictional stories and real life. And I really hate the state of much of the media which satisfies itself by creating scandal where there is none. When it uses McGuffins and tabloid journalism instead of working at honest reporting.

I am usually perusing the news nowadays on the internet every morning instead of in a paper. It wasn’t that long ago when we enjoyed reading the paper.

This Mema Rocks The Vote

Spotted this rockin’ grandma on Senior Planet. She has some good advice for us all.

But my one liner is from David Horsey of the LA Times:

“It is not as if the 2016 presidential election campaign needed a single plot twist more to make it the most bizarre series of political events since Caligula tried to appoint his horse as consul of Rome.”

He is referring to the latest revelations from James Comey about emails found on Anthony Weiner’s computer. And how it has disrupted the last week before the election.  I say Mema is right. We need to be sure to vote!

In/Out

I am so sick of hearing about Hilary Clinton’s emails and what is or is not in them. What is wrong with some of the Republicans in Congress with their endless investigations? And what is with James Comey announcing, on the eve of our Presidential election, that he is reviewing more emails? And what is with the Russian government hacking  into emails and trying to disrupt our election?  Maybe it’s time that communicating by email is out.
