Linda’s prompt for today is ” a word you have to look up.” There is more than one word I have to look up but this one came up again today when I was doing one of my recent favorite activities, the “Jumble, That Scrambled Word Game” by David L. Hoyt and Jeff Knurek at the LA Times. I find that when I am trying to unscramble the letters and make words that I do have to check my spelling now and again. I know I have had to check the spelling of ‘vacuum’ before. I am thinking of the vacuum cleaner because I have been preparing to clear out my house and cleaning out all kinds of stuff. The other definition of vacuum is an empty space. I have not accomplished that yet in my house. I did clear a big space in my garage. As I sort through the contents of drawers and boxes I find a collection of saved memories like the guest list for my wedding and wedding invitation responses, the receipt for my wedding gown and vale, assorted greeting cards from my wedding, baby showers, Mother’s Day, and wedding anniversaries. I even have my wedding gown, vale, and petticoat vacuum sealed in a box by a cleaners in LA. I was told the process would preserve my gown for 100 years. I don’t know if any of my descendants will ever want to wear it. My favorites are the home made cards from my son and daughter. I have samples of my kids art work, school work, and a few of their report cards. I saved some of their baby clothes and a lot of their toys and books. I am thinking it is good that I am sorting through it all and not leaving it for my kids when I am gone. Knowing myself it seems like they will still have stuff of mine to sort out even with my good intentions.

Have you ever thought you have psychic abilities? I definitely have ESP with my family, thinking the same thing at the same time or thinking of them just before they call on the phone. It can’t be attributed to coincidence because it happens too often in my life. When it happens I say we are on the same wave length. Not in the sense that we are of similar opinions, but are tuned into this invisible channel that transmits our thoughts to each other. A medium claims to pick up transmissions from the dead. I am a bit skeptical about that, but when we are very close to someone maybe we can still be on the same frequency even after we’re gone.

A part of my coping with the stress of the world these days is reading books. This is mostly physical paper books. Some from the library, others purchased, and most are fiction. Books are magical things that introduce me to new people, places, and cultures.  As I read, I come to feel like the characters in the stories are real people. I like or dislike them, and care about their actions. Books are containers of whole worlds.

Not feeling an eruption of creative energy. How are people able to be creative with all the negative stuff happening? We are fortunate that the wild fires have not touched us here yet. But as I sat here tonight at the computer I felt an earthquake. Not a bad one, but don’t we have enough right now? Nature just sending a reminder that things could be worse I guess.

Been doing some ‘Spring cleaning’ in the summer and came across the pet collar of our deceased cat. I don’t have the heart to discard it as yet. It has her name on one side with our old phone number and my daughter’s name and our address on the other. Angel never liked wearing the collar. She was feisty but my daughter and I had a close bond with her. It was hard when she died. I have not wanted another cat since.

Even though I have donated about 100 books to the library in recent years we still have a large collection in our house. My husband collects Easton Books, mostly of classics. We have law books, history books, cook books, and mystery books. I have given away many of my books, especially paperbacks, because they deteriorate quickly, take up space, and collect dust. I have held onto some hardcover favorites like David Copperfield, Pride and Prejudice, The Secret Garden, to name a few. I do have several paperbacks of various subjects and genres here right now but will most likely donate many of them eventually. My favorite history books are by David McCullough,’ John Adams’, ‘Truman’, and ‘1776.’ I love books, real paper and hardcover books, not so much the digital ones.
