Sole Mio

‘O sole mio!’ is Neapolitan for ‘my sunshine, or ‘my sun.’ You probably have heard the well-known song. I feel silly because I always thought it meant ‘lonely me’ or ‘by myself.’  You know solo, alone. ‘O sole mio!’ is a prettier song than ‘You Are My Sunshine,’ but looks like they mean the same thing.

I don’t mind solitude but hated losing our wifi the other day. No streaming video, no internet, yikes! So guess what ? I read a 455 page book in 2 days. I thought I did not have the patience to read books any more and I am glad to find out that I do. It was ‘The Legacy’ by Yrsa Sigurdardóttir, an Icelandic author. I read one of her books a few years ago, ‘Ashes to Dust,’ and I really liked it. This latest was another page turner. Now I am starting another by the same author titled, ‘I Remember You.’ This one is spooky, scary, about ghosts creaping around and I think they kill people. Have just started so I will have to let you know. Not good to read it before you are going to sleep. I kept the night-light on for a while last night. And good that I wasn’t sleeping solo.

Cream of Celery Soup

When I was growing up we ate Campbell’s Soup. My father said my younger brother and I looked like the Campbell’s Soup Kids.

One of their soups I liked was Cream of Celery. There are recipes online for making fresh Cream of Celery Soup and other cream of,  (some type of vegetable), soups. They look and sound good, especially for cold winter days. Do you have a favorite?

Here’s another one:

My daughter bought the ingredients to make cream of fennel soup. I’m getting hungry.

Areas Of Critical Environmental Concern

ACEC is a designation given by The US Bureau of Land Management to provide protection to “important resource values. These values vary…and can include things like rock art, endangered plants, wildlife habitat or even spectacular scenery.” (Bureau of Land Use Management)

There is a photo album on Flickr with some great photos of some of the places that are areas deemed worth protection and the public can make recommendations for places to be included. I was thinking about a place not too far from where I live that was damaged by vandals during the recent government shutdown because the Park Rangers were laid off. It is sad that some people are so destructive of our public lands. They must be sick in their souls. If these beautiful places are allowed to be destroyed they will be forever lost to us all.

Yawn

I have been having some allergy symptoms recently, swollen eyelids and watery itchy eyes. Happily the swelling subsided after taking Benadryl for a day, but the trouble with taking an antihistamine is that my head gets foggy and I get sleepy. Not great for my creative processes and the ability to come up with a memorable blog post. So all I can say is ‘yawn.’

Writing Nuttily

Accommodatingly for my post there are absolutely a lot of adverbs that end with -ly, thousands according to an account I recently read. (But just because a word may end with a -ly does not mean it is always an adverb.) I looked at a list by morewords.com and found a few fabulously farfetched examples like adumbratively and acropetally. It could be ascertained that I have an affinity for ‘a’ words but I decided to start and stay at the beginning of a bewilderingly long list. You may wonder where I am going with this stream which is attempting adumbratively to tell you I don’t have the vaguest clue.  And I may not have used adumbratively appropriately either, but it is fun using alliteration abundantly.

Binge Watching

The trouble for me with all the streaming TV services is that they allow me to watch several episodes of a series in one sitting. I am drawn to mysteries and will end up watching the whole series of something at once, kind of like staying up into the wee hours reading a page turner. I want to know how it ends. The episodes are written with cliff hanger endings to keep you engaged. But if I binge watch all the episodes I run out of mysteries to watch too quickly.

Fast and Slow Motion

Even though I can appear stationary, I have been racing around inside. A restlessness because of feeling at loose ends. I think it is related to my moving into a new stage of life. I have been transitioning away from having a work life. And now that I don’t have a lot of stuff I have to do,  to distract me, I have to come face to face with myself. I have decided that is what this part of my journey is about. Taking stock of what my life has been and now setting off on a new adventure… the exploration of this new, unknown territory. But I think I am ready to begin. There are no guideposts, maps, or operating instructions. You have to figure it out for yourself. So I am taking it one step at a time.

Going Batty

untitled Bat Townsend's Big Eared Bat via wikipedia

“She’s got bats in the belfry, squirrels in the attic, owls up in the loft. She’s apeshit, bughouse, batty, mad as a march hare”                 –by gramaticon

Bats are interesting. I have heard their echolocating  cries in the evening. They do eat insects which helps control the insect population. I am glad we do not have any in our attic or any nearby belfries however.

When I first started posting daily for NaBloPoMo and Nano Poblano I thought I would go batty. I have gotten a bit less batty lately coping with the demands of writing.

I do attempt to read others blogs and courteously check in on most of the people who like mine. It has been nice to meet some new blogger friends.

One of my goals has been to connect with other writers and I think these events have helped.

So thanks to all the bloggers who have visited, liked and commented on my blog. Hope you keep visiting and I get to know you better. And welcome to anyone who may not have visited yet.

SoCS-Memento Means Remember

The origin of the word memento was, according to Thesaurus.com, from “c.1400…in the Canon of the Mass which began with the Latin word memento and in which the dead are commemorated.” The Latin word memento means remember.  The English definition is: an object that reminds us of a person or event.  Two synonyms for the word memento are a souvenir and curio.

We have a curio cabinet that belonged to my husband’s maternal grandmother, Nana. We acquired it when she died several years ago. Some of the items we kept in it were hers or gifts from her as well. The cabinet and some of its contents are our mementos of her.

When we were putting in new floors in the living room the furniture was being moved around and the curio cabinet tipped over and the mirror inside shattered. I was upset because this cabinet meant something to me.

It has been lying on its back on an old table ever since while we try to decide what to do with it. My daughter said it looked like it was waiting for surgery. A brother-in-law said it looked like a coffin. This evening I did have some candles on top of it for Halloween which goes along with the coffin image.

The broken curio cabinet reminds me how fragile things are and that they do not last forever. Although I may not always have this memento of Nana we will still have our memories of her and her love.
