If we were having coffee, I would tell you I haven’t seen roadrunners around our yard lately. I did see a couple down by the front gate of the complex one evening. It looked like a mother and a youngster. The mother flew up to the top of the fence and called the smaller one with a rapid clicking sound. I hoped to see more roadrunners, but I haven’t been outside walking as much. It has been a bit too hot for walks. So, I was happy to find a place that the roadrunners regularly visit. It is our local restaurant. Seems like they like the bacon that one of waitresses gives them. She told me she can feed one of them, that she has named Charley, right out of her hand. I wasn’t able to get a photo of Charley. He shied away when I tried. But another one came up close enough that I was able to get its picture. If you click on the photo below a couple of times you can enlarge it and see the roadrunner even better.

Great shot of the wily roadrunner. I used to chase them as a child, LOVE the name of your blog. 🙂

Terrific picture Barbara! Would you tempt them with bacon bits?

Thank you, Susan. I have thought about trying to feed a roadrunner but if I did it at my house I think they would get dependent on me and lose their wildness. So in general, I don’t think it is good to feed them.

I have to agree – it’s not fair that nature’s creatures become dependent on man for feeding –

I don’t think it would be healthy for them.

I am always interested in your stories about the road runners. We in Australia have only ever seen them in the famous cartoons. Denyse #weekendcoffeeshare

I do get excited to see the roadrunners, especially up close. I haven’t seen them around the complex as much as last year. Maybe they are all going our restaurant. Thank you, Denyse.

Nice photo. See any coyotes? lol. Years ago I lived in Texas for a short time. My uncle’s dog liked to chase the road runners, but had about as much luck as the coyote…

Haven’t seen any coyotes yet. The roadrunners can run pretty fast and fly up in short spurts to a fence.

Hi Deb,
I’m surprised that one let you get so close but perhaps this is more due to “bacon” than the bird’s personality.

I think bacon had a lot to do with it. 😀
