I read that Chile has banished Tony the Tiger as part of their campaign to change the dietary habits of their country. I grew up with Tony the Tiger, Frosted Flakes, and other too sweet cereals myself. I can’t blame Tony for any bad eating habits I have acquired over the years.
There were so many choices when I was growing up: Sugar Pops, Lucky Charms, Cocoa Puffs. But I wasn’t “Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs”,
or even for Lucky Charms and the Leprechaun.
But the ads probably do influence kids. I remember the commercials were shown during the times when kids shows were on, like Saturday morning cartoons. I do think I miss Tony the Tiger saying “Frosted Flakes are GRRRREAT!!!! And that’s the end of my tale.
Did you have any favorite, too sugarly, cereals when you were a kid or even now?

I was impressed by Tony’s powerful voice and presence. But I seem to remember liking Alpha Bits and Rice Krispies with the snap, crackle, pop. I guess I liked playing with my food.

Yes, definitely “Snap, Crackle, Pop!” Who can forget Rice Krispies? You really could hear the soft crackling sound when you added the milk. 🙂

I think we ate porridge as young children!

You poor things 😉 Just kidding, we also ate hot cereal like Cream of Wheat and Oatmeal.

I loved Frosted Flakes! I would get a bowl, sit on the floor on Saturday morning and watch cartoons. Those days were Grrrrrrreat!

Sounds like a good plan. Those cartoons were pretty great too. 🙂

I didn’t like any of the too sweet cereals but mom bought them for me and my brothers who loved them – Froot Loops was #1. I would always eat from my dad’s box of plain corn flakes.

I was thinking about Froot Loops too and Trix. You were the more serious type. I did not like the really sweet ones so much either. Raisin Bran ( I was old before my time) or Rice Krispies maybe. 🙂

I was an adult before I liked raisins. I enjoy Raisin Bran now.

Just not into sweets as a kid?

I liked sweets. Candy cake donuts. Just not the sugary cereals. Though the choice between sweet or salty, I’d take a bag of chips.

I like cookies and chocolate. Salty is good too. How about dark chocolate with sea salt? 🙂

Oooooh! The best of both worlds 🙂

I loved Frosted Flakes, but I loved Captain Crunch even better. Now I think I would grimace at how sweet it tastes.

I remember Captain Crunch too. I think kids usually like sweet things.

Loved Cap’n Crunch, but I remember when Count Chocula and Frankenberry came out–they were the best!! Can’t eat that stuff anymore. Bleh!

Count Chocula and Frankenberry, like those names. I remember Count Chocula. I think we grow out of it.

We ate all that sweet sugary cereal when we were kids. Cocoa Krispies, Sugar Frosted Flakes, Sugar Pops, Sugar Smacks, Cap’n Crunch, Honeycomb, Alpha-Bits, you name it. Great stuff!

Sugar Smacks, I was trying to remember that one because my husband has told me he didn’t remember it. There used to be a short Western show on and they would advertise Sugar Smacks. And Sugar Pops are tops. I think I have all the slogans in my brain now.

We still get Frosted Flakes and Rice Crispies. I used to really like Sugar Smacks. The variety pack of cereals in those little boxes used to have perforations you could punch out, and pour the milk right into the box. That was fun, along with the cartoons! 🙂

We have gotten Rice Krispies sometimes. I was thinking about those little individual boxes. Pouring the milk in the box was convenient. We would want to pick out our favorites and when my Dad got to them just the plain stuff would be left.

I like Frosted Flakes, but it’s like after I eat it, I’m wound up
That’s about as sugary as I can go and I think it makes a better dessert than a breakfast, lol! — Also, Cap’n Crunch. That’s dessert. I like Rice Krispies, Cheerios, Chex, and Raisin Bran. Those are the ones my mother let me have, and I guess she really did know best!

I was thinking about it and I remember I would let my kids eat Cheerios and other not so sweet cereals. But we were more into healthy foods then. 🙂

I loved Tony, but I never ate the cereal. I’m not good with sugar in the morning. Loved the meme!

Too much carbs in the morning sometimes causes “blood sugar drop” with me. Thank you, C. Lee. 🙂
