Do you remember fountain pens with the screw in ink cartridges? We used to have those when I was in grade school. We also had traditional fountain pens with the siphoning mechanism to suck up the ink out of an ink bottle. In older times there were ink wells in the student desks. Of course we had ball point pens too. But fountain pens seemed like more fun to use. Only sometimes they would leak and make ink stains on my middle finger. You could pick out the color of the ink, blue, blue-black, turquoise blue. Writing by hand with pen and paper is a lost art and my penmanship is not a good as it used to be. I do have a nice Montblanc fountain pen with a bottle of blue-black ink. You need to twist the barrel to siphon the ink into the pen. I’d like to start writing letters again.

Hi Deborah,
I prefer fountain pen over ball point pen. Due to some reasons I feel my handwriting gets bad when I use ball point pen. Writing with fountain pen gives me confidence. Lovely write up Deborah!

Fountain pens seem more elegant. Is it the liquid ink on the paper? Maybe that’s why my handwriting is not as good (because of ball points) or that I do not get much practice writing by hand anymore. Thank you, Madeeha. 🙂

Yes, it’s liquid ink on paper. I also like smell of ink on paper 🙂

Hmm. I have not noticed the smell but will have to check it out when I use my fountain pen again. 🙂

I do remember. My handwriting was never as good as my pen, even when I used the 99¢ variety. I still have a Cross fountain pen. It probably needs to be cleaned.

I think I used a Parker fountain pen when I was in grade school and it was inexpensive. I recently cleaned my Montblanc. It would be cool to see if your Cross pen is still working. I had a Cross ball point pen and pencil set. Cross made some lovely pens. 🙂

I bought my wife a cross ball point pen in the mid-90s and she still uses it.

I was not into fountain pens much, but I do miss writing with a pen sometimes. Maybe that will motivate me to write Christmas cards or letters enjoyed so much by my elders.

I bet your relatives would appreciate your letters very much. 🙂

The small tricky part of hand writing letters is finding people who actually want to correspond. Best wishes.

One of my friends did send me a handwritten letter after this post but it is true that we all usually do not communicate this way. 🙂
