Little boxes on the hillside
Little boxes made of ticky-tacky
Little boxes
Little boxes
Little boxes all the same
There’s a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they’re all made out of ticky-tacky
And they all look just the same
And the people in the houses all go to the university
And they all get put in boxes, little boxes all the same
And there’s doctors and there’s lawyers
And business executives
And they’re all made out of ticky-tacky and they all look just the same
And they all play on the golf course and drink their martini dry
And they all have pretty children and the children go to school
And the children go to summer camp
And then to the university
And they all get put in boxes, and they all come out the same
And the boys go into business and marry and raise a family
And they all get put in boxes, little boxes all the same
There’s a green one, and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they’re all made out of ticky-tacky
And they all look just the same
(Song written by Malvina Reynolds)

I remember seeing the houses on the hillside in Daly City and my father told me about the song. The prompt ‘boxes’ brought this song to mind.
This note is for FOWC with Fandango, prompt word ‘boxes.’

I always thought Pete Seger wrote that, until quite recently when I learned that (as you so correctly said) Malvina Reynolds did. Who? Turns out she has quite the interesting biography.

Me too. While doing research to make sure I got the lyrics right, I noticed Pete Seeger did not write the song. I wanted to post a photo of Malvina Reynolds but could not find any free ones. She was born in 1900 in San Francisco. She would have been there for the 1906 earthquake like my grandparents. She didn’t start writing her songs until she was 60 years old.
