Smoke Has Been Seen Rising Over Mordor

“The election of Donald Trump to the Presidency is nothing less than a tragedy for the American republic, a tragedy for the Constitution, and a triumph for the forces, at home and abroad, of nativism, authoritarianism, misogyny, and racism. Trump’s shocking victory, his ascension to the Presidency, is a sickening event in the history of the United States and liberal democracy… It is impossible to react to this moment with anything less than revulsion and profound anxiety.” (David Remnick, The New Yorker).

I stayed up too late last night, watching in sickening disbelief, the election results. I am very worried about my country. This is the worst I have witnessed in my life besides assassinations. This was like the assassination of our country.

I’m with you, Deborah. The grief I feel is like one feels when there is a death in the family. Disbelief, despair, sadness, fear, …. But I believe there is still hope as Tolkien’s stories have taught us.

❤ We will feel better. I had not been able to read any speeches until just a few minutes ago. It helped to read/watch parts of Hillary's speech. But I was too raw earlier today.

Yes I think I am starting to recover a little until I see “he who must not be named” again. I watched Hillary make her speech this morning. She looked really good btw. I have felt a bit better reading others articles of outrage about T_______. One young woman was saying I have to be allowed my anger and emotions. I think this is true, we all need to be allowed to have our feelings and not just snap out of it. I just noticed there are protests going on in various cities. I think that is a first after an American election. Thanks, JoAnna. ❤

Yes I am still upset but I have been reading many other posts on Salon.com, Politico, Slate, Daily Beast, Washington Post, LA Times, New Yorker, and Daily KOS and others that make me feel a slight bit better in that many people are very upset and gearing up to push back. I just finished reading a post ” Why What Happened Last Night is So Devastating to Women.”

In the post the writer talks about how excited she was to be able to go to the polls and vote for a woman for President. I felt that same excitement. I felt like telling the guy who was supervising the collection of the ballots that I was so happy to vote for the first woman President of the US but then I thought I am not supposed to talk to the polling workers about who I voted for or announce it inside the polling place. I wore my “I voted” sticker proudly all day. Thanks, Linda..and for the Tweet. ❤

Assassination of the country – I feel so horrible to say that it really does sum up the situation at the moment. I am reading about hate-crimes and threats and it is horrifying. I feel for the people now – it is no more just red and blue!

P.S. Even the title of your post is perfect.

I think we need some calming voices to speak to us but so many people are shocked and upset. I lived through the Watergate scandal when we thought President Nixon would be inpeached and then he had to step down. It was very frightening, even if you didn’t like Nixon, that we could be without a President. At that time, I had a roomate from Taiwan who told me that the scandal was nothing compared to what went on in other countries. I feel like I did during Watergate times. The rhetoric during this election has encouraged some hateful, angry people but that is not going on everywhere, just a few incidents. We have people domonstrating which is something I do not remember happening before after an election. My title is how I was feeling. Thank you, Prajakta. ❤
