Weekend Coffee Share #9 Moving In

Coffee’s ready, come on in. My morning cup is Pete’s French Roast with a splash of half n’ half. It’s how I start my day. That is one constant that hasn’t changed, which is comforting. The past year has been full of unwelcome changes but did end with some positives. My husband and I just moved into our retirement home and we are starting to get settled. We were able to get our COVID vaccines. Our new neighbors are friendly even though we still great each other at a distance and usually with masks on. We have three citrus trees in our backyard. The grapefruit is starting to blossom sharing its lovely fragrance. The landscaping was already in and is dry-scaping with assorted flowering bushes and desert plants, with a drip watering system. I really appreciate that the landscaping is done because I am not good at it. When we arrived the garage was clean and empty. We quickly decorated it with a very large assortment of cardboard packing boxes and have been busy clearing it out. It is probably unrealistic for me to expect it will get back to its pristine state again anytime soon. I have been busy finding just the right place for everything in our cupboards and closets. It’s a challenge when you move in with too much stuff from your old house which had more rooms and closets. My hope was to downsize our belongings. My husband has the most stuff and was the most unwilling to part with it. Maybe we can chip away at some of it in the coming months. I’m probably dreaming again there. It’s funny the things you don’t notice when you are buying a new place. Like the microwave had a missing rack, one of the electric outlets was upside down, the washing machine has a high pitched squeak when it’s running, and there were bins left in the garage for the refrigerator but they don’t fit this model of refrigerator. I said to my husband optimistically ‘maybe the washer is supposed to make that noise.’ He didn’t think so. The washer repair person is coming to check out the machine. At least it’s under warranty.

    I love hearing about your move. Maybe there are a lot of boxes in your garage but they are stacked so neatly. I love seeing all the photos. It looks like you have a lovely mature grapefruit tree. I used to have a pink powder puff at my house in Westchester. I loved it. I think you have been quite remarkable in your move. You seem quite settled even though there are still boxes to unpack.     I laughed at how you’ve redecorated your garage with a packing box display, and that upside-down power outlet. I’ve never seen a roadrunner outside of the cartoons. We don’t have them here in Australia. #weekendcoffeshare

    That’s a huge undertaking and whilst we have moved 3 times in the past 6 years – we are now renting – I think we still need to cull more.However, we still have the space. Sigh. Congratulations on your move. I hope it continues to be one you are glad to have made. We are over 70 and soon our doctor will have Covid vaccines for us. No rush as Australia has not been nearly as badly affected as some countries. Nice to meet you. Denyse #weekendcoffeeshare

      You are a moving pro. I think it is a good move for us and hopefully we won’t need to make another move like this. My husband’s aunt lives in Melbourne and I get some news about Australia from her as well. It is good you have not had as big an outbreak as we have here. Nice to meet you, too.     Happy weekend 🙂 I hope your washer is fixed in a jiffy! When we bought ours, we bought a noisy model, the salesman said many people return it because it’s noisy. Reading your post makes me wonder how I’ll know it’s on the fritz, lol!
    The dry bed is so pretty! Very restful to my eyes.

      Hi, Joey. The repairman came and said it would need a new motor. It will take about 2 weeks to get the part but we can use the machine in the meantime. That is funny about you noisy machine. I hope it keeps working for a long time. I really like the rock landscaping too. Thank you, Joey. ❤

    I hear ya on the moving things… we’ve moved 15 times, now in our 25 year marriage. I told hubby that our next move (back home) was going to be our last. So, we’re taking our time on that decision…looking and contemplating commutes and community. In the meantime, I weedle out things every few months, get rid of things that I don’t feel like I want to move.

    Hi Deb.

    It sounds like you two have just finished what my wife and I are trying to get done. We need to reduce our stuff collection, sell this place and get moved for retirement. I’ll miss some things about the place we’re in now, but not nearly enough to consider staying here. California would force us into poverty so we’re joining the exodus.

    What I really want to do with my retirement is to write and have time to get healthy again. My daughter talked me into capturing many of my stories of growing up and I chose to do it with an eye towards making each short piece entertaining, 10 minute or less, nostalgic and sometimes rowdy looks back. So, yes, I invite you to stop my my story blog and give a few stories a test read. would you like an easy sample: Here’s a link to one of my favorites. As a mom yourself, it should make you smile.

    Hi Gary. I know California is really getting expensive for housing. The low interest rates have really got a lot of people shopping for homes now. It was the right time for us to downsize. I think we downsized our house but not enough of our stuff. Sonoma is one of my favorite places in California. I was born in San Francisco. But I know it is very expensive and there is a housing shortage there too. I haven’t been doing as much creative writing these days. I think the stress of life lately has had a negative affect on my muse. It is very rewarding to write. I wish you luck in finding the right home for you and your wife.
