Save your breath because you are not going to convince me to try any dare-devil stunts like bungee jumping off a high bridge or free solo climbing up the face of El Capitan. I do admire rock climbers but I know my limits. Limits are good. Limits are fine when you get to an older stage of your life. I do not think you need to prove something by jumping off bridges or out of planes. Well to be honest, I wouldn’t have wanted to do those things when I was young either. If I really want to push any boundaries it is in becoming a writer. I have been willing to take some risks with that and put some of my efforts out there. Sometimes it feels like jumping off a cliff, but with writing I don’t want to just play it safe.

I did some climbing on a climbing wall in my 40s and thought I really wanted to climb on rock. Maybe I still will, but mostly I think, I don’t want that kind of stress in my life anymore and would have to buy a lot of Ben Gay. Swimming feels safer and less stressful.

It might be fun to climb on a small rock (with a harness) and swimming sounds very soothing and it is good exercise.

Rock climbing doesn’t bother me in the slightest, despite the fact that I have a healthy fear of heights. You’ll never get me on a roller coaster or any other type of thrill ride. I have no interest in plummeting head first toward the ground with some bungee cord that random dude tied to my ankles. Similar thoughts on jumping out of an airplane. Writing, even experimental writing, is something I can do with both feet firmly planted on the ground. That said, I try to live the advice I once heard (cannot attribute the quote, sadly): “Do something each day that scares you.” I think all creatively minded people live by that philosophy to varying degrees.
