“When it rains, it pours” is a common expression that refers to when a series of bad things happen all together. On the way to a job I got a flat tire. I pulled over to the curb and put on my emergency signal light so the oncoming traffic would see my car and not run into it. After getting my tire changed by the tow truck driver, I went to start my car and the battery was dead. So I had to wait for another tow truck to bring a new battery. Similar to Murphy’s Law that says, “whatever can go wrong will go wrong.” The historic slogan for Morton Salt is “When it rains, it pours,” referring to the image of salt pouring freely out of the container.This image of the Morton Salt girl with the umbrella is over 100 years old.

I might have rolled the car over a cliff, Deborah. I’m glad that all ended well. I do think of Morton Salt when I hear that phrase.

Morton Salt is based in Chicago. They have a huge plant that you can see from the Kennedy Expressway (I90-94). The Morton Salt girl has changed over the years. This is the one from the late Sixties.

When I was writing the post I checked to make sure Morton Salt was still in business and about the logos. The Morton Salt girl has been around since 1914. Interesting to know some of the details that you have. That company has really endured. Thanks, John. 🙂

Yes it had to do with showing the salt doesn’t clump up apparently. Yes the flat tire event happened earlier this year and the tow truck company was very helpful. Thanks, JoAnna. 🙂

You can’t see that little girl with the umbrella without thinking Morton salt. Now that’s excellent branding. 100 years and counting! I do hope those people down south are going to get some respite from this storm. So terrible. I love the stream of consciousness and where it took you today.
