Like baling water from a leaky boat, It seems like the more stuff I try to get rid of, more comes to take its place. Over the past few years, I have periodically worked at getting rid of things. When we had the kitchen painted, we had to empty out the cupboards. I used this as an opportunity to sort through and get rid of what we have accumulated and don’t use. My husband and I seem to working at cross purposes though. He is tempted by bargains on eBay. That’s how we ended up with 2 double coffee makers in addition to our single pot coffee maker. He justifies this purchase because he got one of the double coffee makers for $5. In case you’re wondering, we now have the capacity to make 52 cups of coffee at the same time. I just finished reorganizing our collection of everyday dishes and glassware in the cupboards. My husband has been adding assorted pieces to our everyday dishes for a while, and there really isn’t room for another thing. I thought he had gotten better about buying stuff on eBay. Then, just the other day I spotted some boxes on the dining room table, a set of 24 glass coffee mugs. I asked him why he bought them since we don’t have room and he said, “They were a good price.”

I feel for you. I have similar challenges with my husband. When we moved a year ago, we pitched and purged and it felt good to get rid of so much stuff. But he loves yard sales, he loves eBay… bit by bit, the stuff is returning.
My mother had a saying, and I’ve used it often: “It’s not a bargain if you don’t need it.”

I think it is a common problem for people who have lived long enough to accumulate a lot of things. And we have limited storage space. I wrote this a bit tongue in cheek because I feel it helps to keep a sense of humor about things. I guess we have to start baling faster. 😀 Or maybe we need a yard sale of our stuff.

I may resemble one of the characters in your story. I don’t buy on eBay but I’ve been known to pick up the odd item from an antique shop, tag sale or sitting at the curb with a ‘free’ sign on it.

Ha, ha. I think I know which character you may resemble. 😀

I do tend to fall for freebies, or super fab deals — BUT I prefer to gift them. What a wonderful bargain, a $5 coffee maker! Great gift item. Do you ever need 52 cups of coffee on hand? I can think of two people who would love and use that, and only one has a coffee urn. I’m very fond of glass coffee mugs, too. He should consider gifting some of these things. People love unexpected generosity!
I can’t relate to the acquisition of stuff, as I am a purger. HOWEVER, I can see that if anything else was like paper in my life, I’d be a wreck about sorting and getting rid of it! Paper is my nemesis! lol
Here’s hoping you feel some space forthwith! 🙂

Yes I can understand how these bargains can be tempting. It’s true, we have gifted some of our other acquisitions. I haven’t needed to have 52 cups of coffee available. Maybe I might in a national disaster. Yes, I do like glass coffee mugs and we do already have a set in our cupboard. A few of them are getting older too. But we probably don’t need 24. We have the paper problem as well. Thank you for your good wishes. I will carry on hoping that I will manage to get a handle on it all in the not too distant future. Thank you Joey. 🙂

It was fun reading this one. It put a smile on my face. Good luck with getting rid of things since they are reproducing behind those cabinet and closet doors with a little (a lot) of help from Michael.

Yes I think my efforts may be doomed to fail. 😀 Thank you Cynthia. Glad you enjoyed it. 🙂

My husband runs a non-profit thrift store where lovely 25 cent nick knacks and household items beg me to take them home. Sometimes I say no. One I brought home slipped out of my hand a couple days ago. I’m taking that as a sign that I didn’t need it.

That would be tempting to have a store with lovely inexpensive nick knacks. I think it is ok to buy some little treasures. With me it is that I feel I need to trim down our inventory a bit. 🙂
