Drive Carefully

I say “drive carefully” to my family members any time I know they are going off in the car. We do a lot of driving in California and I usually enjoy driving, but not in crazy rush hour traffic. I am not really keen on driving along narrow, winding roads that run along a high cliff like Highway 1 in California. Although, if I am the passenger, I work to tamp down my fears and enjoy the spectacular views. One place along that highway with a history of being particularly dangerous is Devil’s Slide. When I was a teenager I heard tales of reckless young drivers going over the edge. This section of the highway has been bypassed now and the old section has been converted into hiking and bike trails, a very good idea. Here’s a link to the history of Devil’s Slide and Highway 1, and “drive carefully.”

Yes, I have been reading about traffic and driving in other countries and I don’t think I would do very well with it. Our freeways and drivers here are getting worse. Here we say you need to “drive defensively,” or watch out for other drivers. 🙂

Thanks for participating in #JusJoJan, Deborah. I’ve driven the coast highway a few times. It does have a few scary spots, but the experience is worth the fear. I think it’s more scary as the passenger than the driver. “Drive carefully” is always good advice.

I tell people to “Be careful” when they leave, too. I remember riding along 5 and freaking out — well, I freaked out most of my rides out west — cliffs and no guardrails! Not nearly enough guardrails for me! Here isn’t like that, in either way. We Midwesterners, we like us some guardrails! 🙂

It’s beautiful, but that no guardrails thing scares me, too. I’m curious if they’ve done studies that show guardrails don’t make a big difference or is it that wild and free California spirit?
