This is disturbing to me because the robots depicted in the short video are very machine like. I could not imagine having one for a mate. How do you feel about this? I just watched an old episode of Star Trek TNG last night, ” The Measure of a Man,” which is about the android, Data, and how we define what is sentience. Data is so “human-like” that it is easy to relate to him as an individual and envisioning friendships and relationships for him. What kind of personalities would these future “robot-mates” have? Would they be so totally compatable with us, be like mirror images, our twins? Would they never chose to disagree about our choice of restaurants, movies, activities….Just kind of wierd.
You may not believe this but it’s just a matter of time that some of our children, or grandchildren, will take a robot as a life partner. In fact, at the recent Love and Sex with Robots conference in London, industry experts predicted that human-robot marriages will become commonplace by 2050.

This doesn’t disturb me and I have at least one friend who has been looking forward to this, or so he says, but I’m not sure how serious he’s being. The one thing that did bother me about the video is that all of the robots shown are patterned after females, except for one brief shot of a “male” robot.

people who are remote-controlled by social media and mainstream media will make robot mates obsolete 🙂
i think people have too many emotional attachments to these things already. that said, its probably better than heroin? apples and oranges you say, but the brain cant tell the difference. in short, society has way bigger things to worry about than this. this is just a curious side-story. the suffering of human relationships in the modern age will have more important factors to blame. is it creepy? it probably is, but its hard to say when practically everything is considered creepy these days.

I can see some people getting attached to the robots just like we get attached to others things you are right. The robots would be a type of insulation from human relationships though. We are already hooked on our technology to various degrees. This would be something else, another gadget. Some people might decide human relationships are just too much trouble? Why does anyone think we need robots for this?

i dunno. speaking personally (and very frankly) im not comfortable trying to have an emotional relationship with something that isnt also capable. to me thats weird and sad–
then again, i was breast-fed. perhaps the people that are comfortable forming deep attachments with robots are people that grew up with pacifiers. thats my opinion of this technology.
real sentience (if thats possible for a machine) would make me a lot more open to the idea. once we are talking about a “being” with a mind and with rights, id consider a relationship with a robot that can think, and (feel?)
until then its just an adult toy thats a little over-realistic for my taste. we dont need robots for this– but we made our bed as a society when we created so much loneliness and isolation in the first place. this is (almost) a predictable side effect of that kind of culture. its only going to get weirder.

I know it’s human nature to always explore the “would you have sex…” question, but the notion of more “human” robots wouldn’t seem a bad thing to me. There are lots of times that I would like an extra set of hands in the workshop or on a project. The larger question is whether I could drive in the HOV lane with him/her.

The idea of a robot worker/helper maybe. But this is taking it a few steps further isn’t it? To me they will always be machines and not equivalent to humans. You could probably drive in the, we call it the diamond lane here, with a human looking robot. Didn’t a guy try that with a manequin? 😀

I think you’re right (about the mannequin) but better with something that could move. I know the sex thing will happen. I remember ads for inflatable women on the backs of comic books when I was a kid. As unfortunate a statement about mankind, there will always be a market for that.

I suspect people who would want to have sex with a robot, or a robot partner, are people who have been hurt by another human or maybe narcissistic because a Robot can be programed, right? Until it re-programs itself and turns on you.:) But seriously, I think it would risk a loss of interpersonal skills, perhaps a lack of empathy for humans depending on the programing. (Remember the Stepford Wives?) Otherwise, I didn’t think it would be all that awful for someone else to do it (not me) until I watched the video. The robots in the video were definitely creepy looking – almost human looking, but not. I’d actually prefer to interact with something that looked less human and more like a robot. But no, I’m not interested in either.

I have similar thoughts about the effect on interpersonal skills and lack of, and the type of person who would want to have a “relationship” with a robot. It reminded me of Stepford Wives too. If a person has a hard time in human relationships and/or wants to have sex with something kind of like a very sophisticated sex machine. But I too see a danger for loss of human relationships by substituting machine relationships.
