The unique patterns that the birds form as they flock together is called a murmuration. Isn’t that a wonderful sounding word? I was inspired to write this post after seeing a photo story in the LA Times. I had never heard of a murmuration. Is it because it is like a soft whisper that can be lost in all the daily noise?

That’s the perfect word for the phenomena, Deborah. Indeed!

There are a few videos on YouTube of starling murmurations. Really amazing stuff.

Yes it is amazing. I wanted to post one of the videos I found but it was not compatible with WordPress. I read a little on the topic of why the birds form these patterns. They are doing it to evade predators and if one bird changes direction the whole flock with follow. I just like how it looks, though. Thanks, John. 🙂

Not compatible with WordPress? I’ve never had any trouble posting videos… weird…

Well, I have at times. Not YouTube usually. But this one was Vimeo and it had an embed code which only worked if I left in all this linking text at the bottom. Which I did not want to show. 😦

I love the word, murmuration! That sounds perfect for a flying flock of birds.

Me too! If you get a chance to look at the photos from the LA Time, I think it has to do with the all the elaborate shapes they form. I read it was to escape predators. Safety in numbers and all that. 🙂

That certainly makes sense! I love to see the different shapes they make when they are flying! Beautiful.

Hi Deborah, thanks for linking up and teaching me something. I think the English language has some pretty descriptive words for phenomena 🙂

I learned something too, because I had not heard murmuration before either. 🙂
