Cherished Mementos

Some of things I cherish most are the memories I have of my children as they were growing up and the memorabilia from that time I have saved over the years. I have saved some of their art work, letters, cards, and little gifts from them when they were small. I know I have a large box in the garage containing samples of my kids’ art work and school papers. I could not bring myself to throw the stuff out. Many of these mementos from my children are inside my house as well. How can I say which one is most cherished. That seems unfair.

I often come across them when I am going through my dresser drawer, closets or armoire. They evoke memories of my kids at a certain age and feelings of such deep love and the poignancy of times passed and sometimes laughter.

Some of the things might be, a drawing, a hand-made Mother’s Day card, a note from my daughter saying she loves me, a letter from my son away at camp, a box of their baby clothes, the toy elephant I was given by a friend after my son was born that plays “You Are My Sunshine”,  or my daughter’s first Mary Jane shoes.  I can’t pick just one. Maybe this is why I can’t part with them either.

Some dispassionate person will have to decide the fate of these things after I am no longer of this world.

This is post is my contribution to Cherished Blogfest. You can read other great posts and link up to participate yourself.  🙂

My wife has many such things tucked away in drawers and closets. they might not be the things we grab if the house is on fire, but they will surely be with us as long as she is around. Picking one object is very hard. I better publish my post before I think about it any more and start changing my mind.

Tthanks so much for joining us Deborah.

I couldn’t throw them away either. I have been known to hoard but this isn’t hoarding. I’d say it is cherishing in its purest of forms. 🙂 I know my mum has kept all those little knick knacks I made for her over the years too. I enjoy rummaging through her wardrobe to find them and remember my childhood!

Thanks Colleen ❤ We have been in the same house for over 20 years so I haven't had to move the stuff yet. My hat is off to you. If I do move out of here someday I can imagine that I would take it all with me as well. ❤

We don’t have children, but I still have mementos from my childhood that my parents kept. I didn’t keep everything, but there are a few cherished items that I enjoy having, like pictures and some silly notes that I wrote to my mom and brothers. Nice post!

Deborah, thank you for sharing these special mementos with us! I especially like the “I Love You, Mom” popsicle art! It reminds me of things I created for my mother. I completely agree that you should keep these mementos because it brings joy and sweet memories…My mother kept much of my childhood clothes, toys, cards etc. and it is lovely to go through them and think, “Wow, I was ever that tiny? I fit into that?”
Thanks again for taking us down your memory lane….

There’s nothing better than coming across an item from a loved one’s childhood. It brings back the joy and innocence of early life and makes us realize how quickly time flies!

Such objects are termed as trash by those who shall remain unnamed– but for me, each object carries memories, is a time machine that can teleport me to a particular place and time– I love how carefully you’ve kept your treasures.

Thankyou for participating in the cherished Blogfest– and I’m following you now.
