Happy 4th of July to my country. I love the history of our independence. I highly recommend reading David McCullough’s John Adams and 1776. And I recommend the film miniseries John Adams by HBO if you haven’t had a chance to see it. McCullough’s writing is so wonderful in bringing to life the history of our Revolutionary War, its times and people.
I, like many others, took our history and freedom for granted until I read about what a genuine struggle if was for the people involved in that war. We were losing at the beginning. Somehow our forefathers and foremothers had the courage to continue until they succeeded. It is great to read about how the Declaration of Independence was written. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson were genius.
Today I am indulging in all things 4th of July like on TCM which has dedicated the day to films about our struggle for independence.
Happy 4th of July!
I like the history, too, although I’m not indulging in it today. But speaking of the Revolutionary War and (guilty) indulgences, I managed to get hooked on the TV show “Sleepy Hollow.” I didn’t watch it on broadcast. I thought it looked stupid. Then I stumbled across it on Hulu and watched it for wont of something better to do. The main, time-shifted character is Ichabod, and he knew all of the movers and shakers of the War and is often quipping bits of history and trivia (most turns out to be true). One cute bit was he was at a bar, drinking beer with some of his 2015 pals, and he looks at the bottle of Sam Adams and scoffs. That’s not Samuel. He was much too much the aristocrat to be in shirt-sleeves. Now Revere on the other hand… 🙂

I have not watched Sleepy Hollow but that does sound interesting about the history bits.

I am also a history buff, but I am spending a few hours in the Twilight Zone Marathon this evening. It was filmed over 50 years ago – almost history.

Yes, The Twilight Zone was and is a great show. Besides watching July 4th related films I am into reruns of Star Trek TNG. 🙂

Thanks Anna. Quiet, low key day and then watched the fireworks display. This was all good because my husband and I need to relax. 🙂

I hope you had a Happy 4th, Deborah! It’s nice to have a reminder of what the day is about. Meanwhile, I’m going to hunt down Sleepy Hollow after reading Laura’s comments! My friend recommended the show and now I’m curious… 🙂
