I saw this furry critter out in Palm Desert (photo by Kathy Keatley Garvey, UC Davis website) and I was happy to see it. I had not noticed any around our backyard near Los Angeles for a while. It may be that we don’t have enough flowering plants right now to attract them.
These are the black furry bumblebees with the yellow spot near their heads. I researched them a bit and found a post on the UC Davis website about these bubblebees and that they are now called Bombus Fervidus. I have read that the bubblebee is declining especially in Europe.

We have several kind of bumblebees in Spain. Some is black and others are so very big, that they look scaring even they are needed for our surviving too.

Well I am glad to hear you have several kinds of bumblebees because many of them are threatened with being wiped out. Thanks for the complement on the photo. We still have them in the summer, too, Deborah. I like the bees. It is the wasps and yellow jackets that are nasty and inspire my fear.

Yes I know what you mean. They all have their place but have to careful if you see a wasp nest. I am happy people are reporting that they are still seeing bumblebees. 🙂
