I love the film Moonstruck starring Nicolas Cage, Cher, and Olympia Dukakis and written by John Patrick Shanley. It is a romantic comedy where the main character Loretta ,(Cher), is afraid to get involved with Ronnie, (Nick Cage) ,the brother of her fiancé, because it goes against the rules. When she married her first husband she felt she did not follow the expectations of society and waited to have a baby. When her husband was killed she felt it was because she broke the rules. So Ronnie says to her in response:
” Loretta, I love you. Not like they told you love is, and I didn’t know this either, but love don’t make things nice-it ruins everything. It breaks your heart. It makes things a mess. We aren’t here to make things perfect. The snowflakes are perfect. The stars are perfect. Not us. Not us! We are here to ruin ourselves and to break our hearts and love the wrong people and die! The storybooks are bullshit. Now I want you to come upstairs with me and get in my bed!”

In the movie Loretta goes through a physical transformation from a dowdy looking woman to glamorous as she readies herself to meet Ronnie at the Metropolitan Opera in New York for a performance of La Boheme. A beautiful opera by Puccini.
I don’t think we are here to make things perfect either or to be perfect. We struggle and suffer and flail about a lot and try to do our best many times but we are not perfect.
This is for Stream of Consciousness Saturday with the prompt “sick”. It made me feel a little qualmish to write about “sick” so I decided to pick a synonym.

Moonstruck is one of my favorites, too, Deborah: I think I actually saw it in the movie theater. I love the way a series of things that went wrong ultimately winds up with a happy resolution. Cher won an Oscar for her performance, if I remember correctly. Not only does it have a good message, as you point out, but it is very amusing, with a great cast.

I really like Cher in a lot of parts she has done. It was such a good script “Moonstruck” , a great ensemble piece.

Love this post! Sure, it helps that I love “Moonstruck” but it’s the entire thing. It’s a really good movie and it sends a powerful and painfully honest message about love that shows in that quote.
” We aren’t here to make things perfect…we are here to ruin ourselves and break our hearts and love the wrong people and die!” It is a great quote from one of my favorite movies.

I have to say Deborah that your post engaged me, I haven’t seen this film but maybe I should and I can bear testimony to loving all the wrong people, but I have survived so far. Nicely done.

Thank You! You should see the movie IMHO. I think Ronnie meant by “the wrong people” that it was ok for Loretta to fall in love with her fiancé’s brother because well it was meant to be, they were falling in love with each other. Loretta thought it was breaking the rules and would bring her bad luck.

I saw the movie (albeit quite a long time ago) and I thought it was enjoyable.
But my question is, when did Cher and Olympia get married? You wrote, “I love the film Moonstruck starring Nicolas Cage, Cher and Olympia Dukakis.” Now had use used the Oxford comma, it would have been clear that the movie starred Nicholas Cage, Cher, and Olympia Dukakis.” But the way you wrote it, the movie starred Nicholas Cage and the happy couple, Cher and Olympia Dukakis.
The Oxford comma. Use it! 🙂

Ooops! Well it is stream of consciousness and I was typing away and forgot the comma. Your sentence in this comment says Now had use used the Oxford comma BTW. I guess we all make mistakes. 🙂 I actually had to go back and correct a few things this morning. I wrote this today.

I’m a Cancer, with Cancer rising. I know all about Moonstruck. I have the “mentally deranged” part down pat. You keep reminding me of movies I wouldn’t mind re-watching. Last one was the Ghost and Mrs. Muir.

I like Moonstruck too. Nicolas and Cher are two of my favorite actors. The only way their movies could go bad is if the script is disgusting.

Yes but movie rentals are not popular and the selections are limited. Most people download online. I will look for it at video shops that sells old movies. Our libraries’ collection of such resource is wanting 😉

Love the movie too, Deborah. I often feel that I merely muddle through life – trying to do my best certainly, but frequently stumbling, spluttering and failing. I have come to realise that this is normal, though – at least for me!
